We believed that New Yorkers would share our passion for true Italian gelato if they had access to it. And so we left behind our old jobs and began a quest. Francesco devoted three years to intensive immersion, guided by masters of gelato-making, in both Veneto and Sicilia. He became part of the rising movement of artisanal food-making, committed to the search for wholeness and beauty in the foods we enjoy everyday, and in preserving our connection to that food in its purest form. If that sounds too serious, remember the end point here is scrumptious, fun loving gelato.
Back in New York, Francesco joined with Salvatore and found a space in the Chelsea Market - emporium of food in New York’s lower west side. Surrounded by sellers of fresh produce and fine imported goods, shoulder to shoulder with the Food Network - their quest started to take form. Since then L’Arte del Gelato has opened a gelateria in the heart of Greenwich Village, and in summer 2008 debuted a kiosk, designed in and imported from Italy, selling gelato on the Lincoln Center Piazza from May through October.
